“They are different???” you might ask. You bet they are. Only consolation is fat loss might result in weight loss, but not all weight loss is going to result in fat loss. Which is why diets and weight loss fads really don’t work!!!

To understand we need to really understand how energy is used up by the body. What happens to the calories that goes in as food? They are used up for bodily functions. Thats right. But most people don’t realize that your lean body mass or your muscle is the main calorie burner in your body. It a constant energy burning furnace. It burns calories even when you sit simply or sleep for that matter. The more lean issue or muscle you have the more bigger the energy requirements of your body. Technically put your Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) will be higher.

Ever wondered why someone doesn’t get fat no matter how much he eats. He may even be thin but he has been blessed with a higher BMR due to his body constitution of more lean body mass. The secret of maintaining fat loss is to have a body that has a high BMR that will effectively burn your calorie intake. To achieve this you need to build more muscle or lean tissue. As your lean muscle tissue goes up your body starts burning more energy at the same time your body fat percentage also goes down as you maintain your weight.

When it comes to weight loss for fat loss, slow and steady wins the race. The most healthy proven pace for weight loss is 1-2 pounds or a maximum of 1 Kg a week. If you’re losing more in a week, it’s either water weight or lean tissue you’re losing, not fat. Most diets rely on minimal calorie intake in the opinion that its going to burn the fat for the excess calories. But in reality this doesn’t happen. One, the body can burn muscle easier than its fat reserve. Two, the body needs amino acids every three hours which has to come from proteins. Your body doesn’t store protein so it has to break down your muscle tissue if protein is not available. So it will start burning your muscle rather than the fat for both calories as well as for the amino acids.

After a diet or quick weight loss your body along with some fat would have also lost lean muscle tissue. The downside to that is your body burns lesser calories. Also your lean mass percentage has gone down which adversely means you might have a higher body fat percentage than when you started off. So technically if you had a body that could burn X calories before the diet, it now burns fewer calories in comaprisson. This means you have to eat fewer calories than before or else you are going to add on more fat due to excess calories. Unless corrected you are going to get more fat and if the cycle continues you stay fat.

Weight loss of 1 to 2 pounds a week may seem like an agonizingly slow pace, but if fat loss is your long-term goal, the speed of your weight loss isn’t important. After 5 years of inactivity I know for sure its because of my higher BMR due to my previous workout and muscle building that I did not put on proportional to my eating habits in those years.

I feel that fat loss and weight loss greatly depend on the diet. If you eat more proteins and do strength training, you can burn fat and build muscle at the same time.
